ASTM E84 Standard Test Method for Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials Date: February 03, 2023

Applicable Products:

Floor decoration materials, ceiling decoration materials, wall decoration materials;

Insulation and insulation materials, interior and exterior cladding materials, plywood and upholstered furniture products, etc.

Regulatory Requirements:

In the North American market, all interior materials and ceiling materials need to be tested and graded by ASTM E84 before they can be properly applied in specific construction projects.

Test Methods:

The test sample is placed on the top of the tunnel furnace to accept the fire resistance test, and the flame is sprayed directly to the sample from the double-head nozzle at one end of the tunnel furnace. The entire testing process lasts 10 minutes. Test results are expressed as Flame Spread Index (FSI) and Smoke Development Index (SDI). The flame spread index is derived from the distance the flame travels and the test time.

Test Result Rating:

According to the FSI value obtained by the test, the material is divided into three categories:

ASTM E84 Class A FSI: 0-25; SDI: 0-450

ASTM E84 Class B FSI: 26-75; SDI: 0-450

ASTM E84 Class C FSI: 76-200; SDI: 0-450

The lower the FSI value of the material, the lower the fire hazard. For high-rise buildings and corridors, the FSI value is required to be less than 25; materials with an FSI value of 25-100 can only be used in places with low fire protection requirements, and materials with an FSI>100 do not meet the flame-retardant requirements.
